Bruce and Nix

Jay Bruce and Laynce Nix both contributed to moving the Reds back into first place on Saturday as Cincinnati defeated Cleveland 6-4. Bruce collected four hits and drove in two runs while Nix homered and drove in two. The two represent different styles of offense that both work. Jay collects a ton of hits and walks, giving him .376 OBP. He doesn’t hit for much power, so he’s a run scorer, with 27 runs scored and 18 driven in. Nix is all power, as nine of his 15 hits this season have gone for extra bases. He makes a lot of outs, however, as his OBP is just .316. He drives in run with 10 RBI to six runs scored. Baker batted Nix seventh, which is perfect. A low OBP, high power player should be in a position to finish as offensive sequence, not start one. Baker may want to move Bruce up to the top of the order, however. Orlando Cabrera is not getting the job done leading off, and Bruce would be perfect up there.
