Thumb Mystery

When did Francisco Rodriguez injure his thumb?

–The “fact” that K-Rod suffered the torn ligament in his thumb during last Wednesday’s alleged assault so far comes only from the Mets. I asked K-Rod’s agent, Paul Kinzer, this morning if he disputed that, and he said, “I really can’t comment until I talk to the Mets.”

–Other reporting this morning leads me to believe that K-Rod’s scoreless inning Saturday could become a point of contention if this case goes to arbitration. There is some skepticism at the union about how the closer could have pitched effectively after suffering the injury during Wednesday’s incident. If the case goes to an arbitrator, that would certainly come up.

Given the history of the Mets medical staff, anything is possible. Of course, it’s also quite possible that the fight caused a slight injury, and pitching just finished the job.
