The Phillies defeat the Braves 7-0, scoring all seven runs in the last three innings. The magnificent one, Antonio Bastardo, gets the win in relief. With the Padres winning earlier, here’s what can happen tomorrow to determine the last two playoff spots in the National League:
Braves | Padres | Result |
---|---|---|
Lose | Lose | One game playoff in Atlanta between the Padres and Braves for the wild card. |
Lose | Win | Padres win the NL West, Giants win the wild card. |
Win | Lose | Giants win the NL West, Braves win the wild card. Giants host the Braves in the NLDS, Phillies host the Reds in the other series. |
Win | Win | Three-way tie! Padres host the Giants in a playoff for the NL West. The loser goes to Atlanta on Tuesday for a wild card playoff. The Phillies host the Reds in the NLDS unless the wild card comes from the NL West. |
I’m pulling for the three-way tie. That would be fun!

I truly want a “Win-Win” situation here.
I don’t think the effect of the Padres winning tomorrow gives them the NL West title outright. They and the Giants would each have the same record and would have to play a one-game tiebreaker on Monday to determine the division winner.
