Guerrier Goes West

The Dodgers reached an agreement with Matt Guerrier on a three-year deal:

Newsday first reported the move, which brings one of the more reliable relievers in the game over the last few seasons to Los Angeles. Guerrier, 32, has spent his entire seven-year major league career with the Twins, making at least 73 appearances each of the last four years.

Matt pitched the most relief innings in the majors over the last four seasons, 311 2/3, beating out Heath Bell by 1/3 of an inning. Ever since Rob Murphy blew out in the early 1990s, I’m a bit wary of heavily worked relievers. On the other hand, Guerrier never worked 100 innings in a season, so he may not be in as much danger as Murphy was.

Matt’s strength rests in his ability to avoid walks. He doesn’t strike out many batters and he gives up home at a higher rate. He’s moving from a good fielding team to a poor one, so we’ll see what more batted balls finding holes does to his ERA.
