Go Car Go!

The Rockies extended Carlos Gonzalez’s contract:

The Colorado Rockies have agreed to a seven-year, $80 million contract extension with Carlos Gonzalez, pending a physical examination, the outfielder said via Twitter on Monday.

”It’s not at all finalized. But everything is practically concluded. All that’s left are the physical evaluations,” Gonzalez told Meridiano Television in Venezuela.

”It’s a blessing for me to have this contract at such a young age,” he added.

If my calculations are right, Gonzalez is giving up three years of free agency for $80 million now. Given what good outfielders made this year, it might have been worth the wait until after the 2014 season for the really big money. Scott Boras is CarGo’s agent, and I’m somewhat surprised he went for the deal. Hitting the free agent market after his age 28 would probably bring more money and waiting until he is 31. I suspect Carlos is happy in Colorado and simply wants to stay there. I suspect this will turn out to be a great deal for the Rockies.

This contract sets him up for life. Making the first $10 million is very important to players, since injury or a failure to perform means they could be out of the game in the 20s and not have enough money to support themselves financially for the rest of their lives. Awfully tough to turn down $80 million just for the chance at a bigger payday four years from now.
