Stepping in the Beckett

The Orioles defeat the Red Sox 6-4 as Boston blows an early 4-1 lead. Josh Beckett gives up a two-run homer to Mark Reynolds in the seventh, Reynolds second home run of the game. Terry Francona allowed Josh to pitch the eighth, and he put runners on second and third with one out before Alfredo Aceves got the call. That gave Vladimir Guerrero the opportunity to be the hero, and he singled in both runners for the final runs of the game.

Boston fails to take advantage of the Rays loss this afternoon. The Angels gain a game, and with the Rays and Yankees tied at two in the top of the eighth, Tampa Bay may come out of the double header having gained 1/2 game on the day. The epic collapse of the Red Sox continues. Boston has only won one game in September in which they scored less than 12 runs.

What do you mean? It was a great day for the Red Sox. They lost fewer games than the Rays lost, so they put some extra space between them and their pursuers! Exactly what they wanted.
