The Theo Rumor

Rob Neyer on why the rumor of Theo Epstein leaving the Red Sox for the Cubs might be true:

Which achievement would be more notable: Winning three World Series with the Red Sox, or ending eternal runs of failure in both Boston and Chicago? If Epstein were to win a World Series with the Cubs, he would become the second-most famous baseball executive in major-league history, behind only Branch Rickey, and without a doubt would wind up with a plaque in Cooperstown.

I agree. What’s not clear to me, however, is that the Cubs will have the same resources available as the Red Sox did. Winning was a big part of John Henry’s plan to grow the value of the Red Sox. I don’t know that the Ricketts are up to that. If I were a Chicago fan, however, I would be very happy to see Theo in the front office.
