Tigers Advance

Detroit’s pitchers bent but did not break tonight as they allowed then hits and three walks, but held the Yankees to 2 for 9 with runners in scoring position. The Tigers collected eight hits, but the two solo shots in the first inning were the big blows. The Yankees relievers needed to pitch seven innings after Ivan Nova‘s forearm tightened. They struck out 10 and walked two, but it was CC Sabathia who gave up the eventual winning run, so maybe his use as a reliever wasn’t such a great idea.

Don Kelly and Delmon Young each homered for Detroit. They both ended up hitting better than .300 and slugging better than .600 for the series.

Alex Rodriguez went 0 for 4, leaving the bases loaded in one at bat and making the last out of the game. He’ll catch hell for that from the New York press.

Congratulations to the Tigers on the win. Once again, Jim Leyland leads his team to a win in the post season.

Hate to say this, but when A-Rod came up with the bases loaded, It was a relief got Tiger fans — he seemed like the Yanks weakest hitter.

Russ Martin had that honor locked down, but A-Rod looked bad. Weird, because he looked like he was coming back to life in game 4.

Historically, the Yankees have won World Series in bunches, with almost every win coming within two years either before or after another win. The 2009 championship will now be only their third championship “in isolation” – along with 1923 and 1932.
