Griffey’s Reaction

I was not impressed with Ken Griffey, Jr. receiving the Commissioner’s Historic Achievement Award. When I worked for ESPN, I saw how immature and thin-skinned Griffey could be. I do like the fact that Griffey didn’t think he deserved it, too:

“It’s very humbling,” Griffey said via cell phone as he prepared to board his private plane_which he pilots_for the trip back to Orlando from Dallas-Fort Worth. “One of the things I said to Bud when he told me was, ’Are you sure,’ and he said yes.”

Griffey did grow up after leaving Seattle. I get the feeling, however, that Selig gave the award to Ken as he is the poster child for not doing steroids.
