Winning by Clogging

The Cardinals won the World Series by clogging up the bases. They posted an OBP of .366, which is an incredible number for a team, tied for 17th in World Series history. The broke the record of 40 walks held by the 1997 Cleveland Indians, drawing 41.

At times it did seem like those walks were doing nothing more than clogging the bases. The Cardinals hit just .203 with runners in scoring position, but with 86 plate appearances in that situation, (12 per game), even a small number of hits delivered runs.

With men on base, their OBP rose to .408. They just kept putting pressure on the Rangers, and the dam finally broke in the last two games. This was a case in which good hitting beat good pitching and defense, as the selectivity of the Cardinals hitters forced the Texas defenders into bad situations.

You’re right. After that 9th inning debacle (as I see it) in game 2 by the Cardinals… they did great the rest of the series. I loved the way they would take most pitches they couldn’t hit, during game 6 & 7.
