Ramon Hernandez catches for the Cincinnati Reds. Ramon provides a good example of the stages of the career of a hitter.
Season Ages | On-Base Pct | Slugging Pct |
---|---|---|
23-26 | .318 | .380 |
27-30 | .335 | .452 |
31-35 | .334 | .411 |
Hernandez’s peak came a little later than most, not establishing himself as a good hitter until his age 27 season. During his peak, his power was outstanding for a catcher. While he lost his long ball ability since, he manages to get on base decently for a lower order hitter.
One other thing that came with age appears to be a better throwing arm. In each of his years with Cincinnati, Hernandez threw out over 1/3 of the runners trying to steal against him. That may be experience, or it may be that the Reds staff does a good job of holding runners, or the coaching staff does a good job of calling pitch outs.
Ramon delivers solid offense and defense for his position, making him a useful player behind the plate. As long as he keeps getting on base, at or above the league average, he’ll have a job.
