Sunday Night Massacre

The new Astros ownership swept out the old Astros front office:

The Houston Astros fired general manager Ed Wade and team president Tal Smith on Sunday night in the first of the changes promised by new owner Jim Crane.

Wade leaves a franchises stripped of most of it’s major league talent as the Astros traded their two best players, Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn during the regular season.

Postolos said the Astros want a candidate who has a strong commitment to player development necessary for long-term success.

“Our goal is to consistently compete for a championship, and we know the first step towards that goal is to develop one of the top farm systems in baseball,” Postolos said. “We will hire the best candidate available to achieve our goal.”

I put Ed Wade in the Dave Littlefield class of GMs, those who talk a good game but execute poorly. Wade also shared a trait with Dayton Moore, tending to make trades for players he know from his former organization. If Crane realized these were flaws, there might be some long term hope for the Astros.

Great attitude by the new owner. he’d really earn some points if he makes something like “We want to meet the Rangers in the World Series, not just June!” his team’s rebuilding mantra. I think the whole state of Texas would get into that, and it’d be fun.
