Two More Years

Owners will offer Bud Selig a two-year extension to his contract.

It’s expected that at some point during the upcoming owners’ meetings, which start Wednesday in Scottsdale, Ariz., Selig will be asked to depart the room, and then, as a matter of formality, a motion will be made to extend Selig’s contract — a motion that will be widely supported, according to sources.

Selig’s compensation, which includes the use of a private jet, is in excess of $22 million annually, according to a source.

When his current three-year contract extension was approved in 2009, Selig, who had previously said he would retire that year, announced there would be no more extensions.

“This is clearly it,” he said at the time. “I could say this without equivocation.”

That’s Bud the used car salesman talking.

“This is the best I can offer you, but let me talk to my manager.”

“Hey! We can give you another $200 off the price!”

It’s tough to suppress years of experience.

At some point, MLB needs to replace Bud. Either he actually retires, or he passes away. It’s probably better to do it while Bud is still healthy and in charge, rather than scrambling to find a replacement at the last minute.

I was surprised that he got the 2 year extension. Baseball is headed into a new era after steroids hurt the game for so long. I think it would be good to see some new leadership.

Not surprising. Did the owners get richer under Selig? That’s the bottom line. But yes, they do need to plan for succession.
