Back to Third

Miguel Cabrera says he is indeed moving back to third base:

Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera told a Spanish-language website that he will move to third base to make room for new first baseman Prince Fielder.

“I will come back to the third base, which is my natural position,” Cabrera told liderendeportes.com in a story translated into English. “The arrival of Fielder will benefit us.”

Cool. The Tigers pitchers will need to generate a lot of strikeouts over the next few seasons, but with Verlander on the staff, it shouldn’t be too difficult.

I love that Cabrera is still calling third his “natural position.” And I’m not being facetious; I mean that: these guys think they’re the best, and that’s a big part of why they succeed.

He could have said, “Well, sure I can go back there if that’s what best for the ball club.” This way, he sounds more sold on the idea.

Do you see the Tigers going all in and making a deal for Matt Garza? I assume they don’t have the money left for Edwin Jackson.

Cabrera was not good at 3rd, 30 Lbs ago….this could be bad-Of course if Verlander and the Det staff K enough hitters, they may be able to hide him.

I just had a flashback to the Dodgers’ notorious decision in the mid-1980’s to put Pedro Guerrero at third. Tommy Lasorda tried to bolster his confidence: “Pedro–what are you thinking when you’re out there at third base?”

Guerrero: “Please God–don’t let them hit the ball to me.”

Lasorda (shaking his head and looking frustrated): “No–that’s not right, Pedro. What else are you thinking out there?”

Guerrero: “Please God–don’t let them hit the ball to Steve Sax, either.”

Seriously, everyone who signed off on trying to make PG a third baseman should have been hogtied, covered in honey, and dropped off at the nearest fire ant colony.
