Maybe Mariano Should Retire

Mariano Rivera comes into a 6-5 Yankees-Rays game in the bottom of the ninth, and gives up a single and a triple to the first two batters to blow the save and even the contest. The Yankees then intentionally load the bases, bring in a fifth infielder and pitch to Sean Rodriguez. Sean gets ahead 3-1, but swings and misses twice to strike out. One down.

Update: Carlos Pena bats with the bases loaded again. He hit a grand slam in the first inning. This time he hits the ball to the wall in left and the Rays win 7-6. Counting the final game of 2011, that’s two in a row where he Rays were able to come back late to beat the Yankees.

Update: The Tampa Bay bullpen pitched four innings. They walked four and struck out three, but did not give up a hit.

Apparently the low scoring memo was just late in arriving. And wasn’t shown to Mo.
