Kotsay Connects

Washington won the battle of the starters, but San Diego took the game on the bullpens as the Padres beat the Nationals 2-1 late Thursday night. Jayson Werth hit a solo home run in the seventh off Edinson Volquez after Edwin Jackson pitched six shutout innings (6 2/3 overall), lowering the Nationals starters ERA to 1.61. Mark Kotsay, however, doubled home two in the bottom of the eighth off Tyler Clippard who gave up two walks and two hits in the game. Kotsay played sparingly this year, but is 4 for 14 with two walks in his role as backup and pinch hitter. The game was the Padres second 2-1 win of the season. It was the third 2-1 game for the Nationals, and their first loss.
