Jordany Valdespin (who may become ESPN’s most popular player since Cecil Espy) collected his first major league hit, a three-run homer off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth to send the Mets to a 5-2 victory over the Phillies. The middle infielder didn’t show any power in the minors until 2011, when he hit 17 of his 33 MiLB homers. He’s now 1 for seven in the majors, with a slugging percentage over .500.
