Pettitte Smoaked

Andy Pettitte allowed two home runs in his return to the Yankees, one to Justin Smoak and one to Casper Wells as the Mariners win 6-2. In addition to the home runs, Pettitte walked three and struck out two in 6 1/3 innings, so his three true outcomes were all below average. On the positive side, ten of the 12 ball in play outs came on ground balls, so Andy is still able to keep his pitches down somewhat.

Truthfully, I’m not that surprised by this outcome. Andy took a year off, and he’s old in baseball years. While Pettitte was never an outstanding power pitcher, he was always okay. The Yankees don’t have a great defense this season, so if Pettitte is going to allow a high number of balls in play, a lot of them are going to wind up hits.

The other old man on the mound, Kevin Millwood, allowed just one run. He walked four but allowed just three hits in seven innings for his first win of the season in a bend but don’t break game.
