Grand Fish Finish

The Marlins needed three runs to beat the Mets in the bottom of the ninth, but Giancarlo Stanton went whole hog as his grand slam won the game 8-4. The Marlins tied the game on an Emilio Bonifacio triple, (his second of the game), a John Buck walk, a Greg Dobbs single and a Jose Reyes sacrifice fly. After another walk and hit by pitch, Stanton delivered the big blow, his third hit of the game. Jonathon Niese pitched six shutout innings for the Mets, but saw his efforts go down the drain as the bullpen got hammered.

With 15 extra base hits on the season, Stanton is slugging .529. He’s been hot in May, with six home runs so far this month. Miami is now just one game behind the Mets for third place in the NL East.
