Give the Dodgers a Big Hanley

The Dodgers acquired Hanley Ramirez from the Marlins.

A person familiar with the trade told The Associated Press about the swap on condition of anonymity because there was no official announcement.

The Dodgers will also get reliever Randy Choate while the Marlins will receive pitcher Nathan Eovaldi and a minor leaguer.

John Sickels has much more on the two players the Marlins received. It doesn’t really seem like that much of a haul for a player who is under contract at a reasonable price until 2014.

I hope Hanley finds himself with the Dodgers. He’s only 28, and I would hate to think his career peaked at age 26. No matter, he should be a huge improvement over Dee Gordon even at his current output. The Dodgers hope, however, that Han-Ram gives them the same boost they received when they traded for Man-Ram.

If I’m a Miami Marlins fan, I’m pissed. For years the ownership screamed and hollered about the stadium. They put teams on the field that were good, but not quite good enough and seldom made a move to take them to the next level at the trade deadline. They would use the revenue stadium excuse for their lack to trying to win.

What is their excuse now? Can this front office only build a team on a shoestring? Did they mis-read the injury status of their players? Did they sign the wrong free agents? Did they hire the wrong manager? Were they more interested in making a television show that playing baseball? (I like to think they killed a man. It’s the romantic in me.)

The next time a team holds up a city for a new stadium, someone should trot out the Marlins. The failed miserably in delivering on their promises, and the people of Miami and the fans of the team should be rightly upset at all the money wasted on the team and the stadium.

Thanks to Alyssa Milano for the alert!

What if Han-Ram is just a bust? I’m not sure what’s holding him back, but when you look at his career numbers nothing screams possible first ballot HOF candidate about this guy. I mean, if Han-Ram stayed with the Sox and posted those stats, Boston fans would have wanted him traded for a sack of balls. Here’s hoping he can perform better when there’s actual pressure placed on him.

“The next time a team holds up a city for a new stadium, someone should trot out” every city and state financed stadium of the last century.
