Triple Crown Watch

Mike Trout went one for five Tuesday night, and Josh Hamilton did not hit a home run, making Miguel Cabrera‘s triple crown almost a certainty.

Cabrera has the following probabilities of at least tying in the three triple crown categories:

  • Batting Average (vs. Trout or Mauer): 1.0
  • Home Runs: .994
  • RBI: 1.0

It’s an Ivory Snow day for Cabrera, as he’s 99.4% likely to finish leading in all three categories. His probability of winning the triple crown comes down to Josh Hamilton’s ability to hit two home runs in a game. Hamilton is playing for a division championship, so I won’t put it past him. Detroit plays the last game in the AL today, so Miguel will know if he won the crown before the contest begins.

I hope Cabrera gets the Triple Crown. It’d simply be awesome, AND it will force people to think about the meaning of stats. That will be good for the future of baseball, as well as spawn some good discussions and articles to read throughout the offseason.

Assuming Trout or Mauer go 4-5, how many oh-fers would Cabrera have to have in order to lose the batting title?

Miggy for MVP! Although I expect Triut to win it. Maybe they should give these awards for three or four year periods instead of single seasons. The Mist remarkable thing is that, although the triple crown chase creates attention for this year, his numbers are not signicantly different than the last two years. Less intentional walks this year, more home runs, more RBI, probably because Fielder is now behind him.

Maybe what makes MUggy the most “valuable” player is that he was willing and able to move to third base to make room for Fielder. So, for all the fans of WAR, maybe Cabrera should get credit for Fielders WAR as well as his own.

Now that the Rangers are done and Hamilton did not hit any HRs, Cabrerra could sit out and pretty much lock it up.
