Playoffs Today

The Athletics and Tigers turn things around quickly with a noon EDT start on Sunday, Tommy Milone taking on Doug Fister. Milone is not in a good situation in Detroit. His 24 home runs allowed in 190 innings is high, but 18 of those came in 91 1/3 innings on the road. It took Fister a while to turn things around this season, but since the All-Star break he is 8-4 with a 2.67 ERA, walking 22 and striking out 89 in 101 innings.

The Nationals and Cardinals get underway in St. Louis with Gio Gonzalez taking on Adam Wainwright. Despite his ace status, the Nationals did not push Gonzalez’s use, limiting him to 199 1/3 innings. The Nats staff should have gas in the tank for the playoffs. Wainwright threw 198 2/3 innings in his return from Tommy John surgery. He seemed to get his dominant status back in July and August, but hit a wall in September with a 4.20 ERA.

CC Sabathia and Jason Hammel battle in Baltimore as the Yankees and Orioles get underway. The Orioles pounded Sabathia for 24 hits and four home runs in 18 1/3 innings, leaving him with a 6.38 ERA in three starts against Baltimore. Hammel did somewhat better against New York, with a 3.94 ERA in three starts, only allowing two home runs.

Finally, the Reds and Giants conclude the west coast portion of their series with Bronson Arroyo facing Madison Bumgarner. Arroyo gave up twenty fewer home runs this year compare to his mono plagued 2011 season. Bumgarner gave up 11 more home runs this season, but they only led to five more runs allowed over all in four more innings pitched compared to 2011.

Enjoy!
