Lucky 13

Jayson Werth hits the 13th pitch of his 9th inning at bat into the Cardinals bullpen for a walk-off, 2-1, Nationals win, pushing their NLDS into a fifth game. For the second year in a row, there will be at least 19 games played in the LDS round. I was listening to the game on the last leg of my journey home, the Nationals home radio team on the air. As Jayson continued to foul off pitchers, the play-by-play announcer said to his color man, “Does this remind you of the at bat after the rain delay?” The replay was something like, “You’re trying to be the summoner.” I guess there was a long Werth at bat after a rain delay that ended in a home run. Suddenly, the ball park exploded as Werth’s pitch left the building, and the radio man called it just right.

While the offense is still stuck in neutral, the pitching staff looked like the best in the NL today. Ross Detwiler allowed just three hits and an unearned run in six innings of work, while the relievers (including Jordan Zimmermann), struck out eight of the 11 batters they faced, giving up no hits and two walks.

The team lives for another day, and Friday night we’ll see at least the third game five of this season.

It was fun listening to the game on the MLB At Bat app. The crowd was going wild with each strike, and you knew something good was happening for the Nats before the announcer was able to describe the play.

Kyel Lohse pitched a great game, going seven innings and allowing just two hits. Unfortunately, one of them left the yard. Adam Wainwright and Gio Gonzalez rematch tomorrow. It should be a lot of fun.
