Say Hey

AZ Snakepit looks at the biggest WAR differences between the MVP winner and the best WAR in the league (position players only). Looking down the list, it’s amazing how many times Willie Mays lost big. Ken Boyer beat out Willie in 1964, Maury Wills beat out Willie in 1962, and Dick Groat topped Willie in 1960. The ’60 and ’64 votes could be explained by the winner’s team winning the pennant. The Giants, however, took the pennant in 1962. Maury stole 104 bases that season, getting caught just 13 times. His SB total set a modern record at the time. Mays led the league in home runs with 49. His slugging percentage was over .600, but did not lead the league as Frank Robinson finished first in OBP and slugging percentage. Mays beat Robinson when fielding is added in, however. It was a very close vote as Wills won 209-202. Willie should have had five MVPs.

Mays led the league in WAR 9 times and 10 times for position players. So maybe he could have had 10 MVP awards.
