Pieces of Eight (Million)

The Giants and Buster Posed avoid arbitration with an $8 million, one-year contract. It’s a real bargain for Posey’s production. We’ll see if Buster can keep the streak alive of the Giants winning the World Series when he plays at least 100 games.

I’m somewhat surprised that San Francisco hasn’t signed him long term. Maybe they’re waiting to see if he can actually hold up for a full season, or maybe Buster just wants to make as much money as possible through arbitration and free agency. Wendy Thurm gave this some thought:

It also makes sense for the Giants to wait at least one more year before committing big dollars and many years to Posey. His value is off the charts right now, but his 1,255 plate appearances are still a relatively small sample on which to craft $70 million deal. Even at $6 million-plus, Posey’s 2013 salary won’t break the bank. And an extra year of playing time will give the team more information on which to assess the merits and value of a long-term contract.
