Desperation

The Yankees and Angels are working on a deal that would send Vernon Wells to New York:

“I’m not at liberty to have any conversation publicly about this yet,” Cashman said. “I know what you’re asking me but there’s a lot of i’s to dot and t’s to cross before you get to the finish line, so that’s about all I can give you.”

According to sources, Wells’ locker at the Angels spring training camp has been cleared out. The only remaining issues are which prospects the Yankees would part with in exchange for Wells, and how much of Wells’ remaining salary will be eaten by the Angels.

Unbelievable. I would not take Wells unless all I had to give up were prospects with a low probability of making the majors and if the Angels had to pay a large percentage of Vernon’s salary. Musings Marcels project Vernon with a .289 OBP. It’s not even the last year of his contract, so the Yankees would have to carry him next season. I hope this deal does not go through.

Update: Lone Star Ball is not happy:

This is kind of bad news for Texas, as the presence of Wells could have cut into the playing time of defensive wizard Peter Bourjos. Now, the path is open for Anaheim to have a Trout/Bourjos/Hamilton outfield.

It also looks like the Yankees will be paying Vernon $5 million a year. That means Wells needs to produce one WAR to make the deal worth while. He produced well under one in three of the last four seasons.

Either the Yankees only remember only the Blue Jay years or they haven’t liked what they’ve seen in camp.

He will probably hit about .235 but have 20-25 HRs due to the short porches. Unbelievable that they don’t have any better options in their farm system.

They could have had Napoli for 5 million a year.

What is the AAV implications. With the Angels it was 18 million. Do the angels get hit with 13 and Yankees 5?

A few years ago, when Cashman signed another mind-numbing extension he vowed to ‘change the story’ Mission accomplished.
