Beta Testing

Mike Matheny stressed the new replay review system on Tuesday:

The play in question came at a critical moment in the ninth inning. With none out and runners on first and second, Kolten Wong sent a bunt down the third-base line. Mets pitcher Miguel Socolovich fielded the ball and threw to third, where third-base umpire Mark Ripperger called Randal Grichuk out.

Matheny told bench coach Mike Aldrete to alert Cardinals staffers watching the feed to check the video, then emerged from the dugout to question the call. Matheny said it took less than 15 seconds to get the word to challenge.

A little more than two minutes later, the out call was upheld. Matheny said the replay official didn’t have access to the same video feed that the Cardinals’ staffers did.

The lack of feed was due to the nature of spring training, but Matheny is using it to make a valid point; will MLB in New York have all the feeds it needs to make the calls? I suspect it will, but this is exactly what a real world test is supposed to do, find the weaknesses in the system so they can be addressed.

Exactly, this was my main concern when it was first announced. Who is responsible to send the feeds back to NY and how does MLB make sure the home team (or their TV station) does not try and screen feeds which would be unfavorable to the home team. This was not something that should have caught anyone by surprise. I would be very disappointing if they don’t have a handle on it since I would rather no replay than a system which allows teams to cheat.
