Heads Up
Johnny Damon hits a slow roller down the first base line. Ponson alertly hits Damon in the back with the ball, because he was running inside the baseline. Nice heads up play by Ponson.

Can somebody explain to me how Pokey Reese ended up at first base in the aftermath of that play? It seemed like he advanced to second as Damon was running to first, but here he is at first. Joe and Jon are too busy blathering about steroids to comment, and ESPN didn't show any camera angles that have Reese in the shot.
Apparently, the play ends up like it was a dead ball, but the runner hit was out, so the runner moves to first.
I frankly don't get it. The O's were conceding second to Pokey on that play, so he should get it. It's not like the play being stopped with the ball hitting Damon prevented them from getting Pokey out...
I was scratching my head about that as well. But, according to Rule 7.09, when a runner is out for interference: "The runner is out and the ball is dead."
kind of makes sense if you think about it. I can see a circumstance where a baserunner who is going to be out interferes to allow another baserunner to advance. It is a rule tailored for other situations maybe but Damon knows the rules.
Such as Reggie Jackson in the '78 series, but that wasn't called interference.
