Yanking Johan
Johan Santana, one of the good young pitchers to emerge last year, had another poor outing today. He struck out 7 in 7 2/3 innings, and his K numbers remain good. He walked four, and his walks are up from last year, but not much (2.6 vs 3.0). What killed him again today is the HR ball. Huff yanked a three run shot, the 12th Santana has allowed in 2004. He gave up 17 in 158 1/3 innings last year. What's worse, 8 of the 12 have come with men on base.

I caught a bit of this game at lunch at BW3. I was pissed at first because I had benched him on my fantasy team. He carried a no hitter through 5 and then seemed to self destruct in the 6th. After that I was glad I benched him.
He was just cruising along, then the hits started coming. His control really was not that good this game. I watched about 4 innings today. His fastball and changeup were good, but the rest he had no control of. There were about 8 balls in the dirt that Blanco did a masterful job in blocking. It seems like this with him this year, I think he's trying to be too perfect and outthinking himself, if that makes sense.
somewhere, aaron gleeman is crying in a beer...
Walks up 15% . . . HR's up significantly . . . pretty apparent Johan's not hitting his spots.
