Imagine If He Were Healthy
Albert Pujols' heel pain has returned. I didn't realize how much it bothered him last season.
"I'm telling you I'm not going to go through the same thing I
went through last year," Pujols said. "I don't think my body can
handle that in back-to-back years."
Despite his numbers, Pujols said it was difficult to play with
the injury.
"Only God knows and myself, how much pain I was playing in,"
he said. "It's over, I went through it and that's something I
don't want to experience again."
Maybe if his heel was healthy he would have cracked the 100 extra-base barrier. He only had 99 in 2004.

IIRC plantar fasciitis is what prompted Jay Buhner to retire. PF is very treatable, though apparently it can become quite painful if left untreated for too long. The noticeable thing about it is that when it first starts showing one's foot hurts when he/she gets up from lying or sitting down as opposed to feeling it when one's been standing for awhile. With me orthotics made all the difference. My guess is that he ignored it for awhile; it doesn't hurt that badly at first. By the time he sought treatment the problem had really deteritorated.
I had the same problem about 10 years ago, went to a podiatrist, who made me some orthotics, and I've been wearing them ever since and haven't had a relapse. They make me half an inch taller, too!
