Putting the Cards in Order

As a follow up to this theory at The Birdwatch, CurveBlog had James Click run some simulations of different Cardinals lineups. The lineup with Walker, Pujols, Edmonds and Rolen 1-2-3-4 does very well.

Interesting that "E" gives the highest "guarantee" while "C" has the highest average and "ceiling"... I wonder how it would look after ten thousand seasons each, but I'm not about to ask anyone to find out...

It seems worth pointing out that this possibility only exists because of the Cardinals' very unusual position. They have four guys with the liklihood of hitting somewhere around .400 obp and .550 slugging, 2 righty and 2 lefty, so the normal concern to get the power behind the walks is absent, and you are not inviting abnormal pitching patterns...

There's still some question of whether Sanders should hit fourth so that a higher OBP can lead off the #5 hitter innings-- but of course with four guys at around .400, the #6 hitter will lead off about half again as many innings as usual?
