Superman At Bat

Armando Benitez has loaded the bases with two out in the 9th to give Jeff Kent a chance to win the game with a home run. It's 8-5.

Update: Benitez walks Kent. Now a Bradley double can win the game.

Update: Bradley singles hard to left. Jason Ellison, who had pinch run for Feliz, has the ball skip by him and the Dodgers win 9-8.

Good camera work by the Dodgers broadcast. They had the whole play from the high home camera at a wide angle. You could see that Ellison was going to miss it before it got near him. Going the opposite way, the low liner had a lot of English and was skipping rather than rolling. Ellison never got in front of it and it went by his backhand. I'm assuming it's a single and error rather than a double.

well, they could have left Feliz out there instead of bringing in a wet-behind-the-ears outfielder making his MLB debut in a game as close as it was. Felipe Alou should have worried about having the young outfielder out there - youngsters will commit errors when they first come up from AAA because the game is so much faster than it is down there. Ellison will recover and probably be a good defensive outfielder eventually, but if I was Alou, I would have left Feliz in the game.

And it's not like Benitez never melted down before, right? It's hard to cover up a history of monumental collapses with one good year in Florida.

Just for laughs, I went back to ESPN and read "Top 10 Armando Benitez Meltdowns." For those interested:

http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/2003/0717/1581988.html

And Kent's quote afterwards was telling:

"Hope you guys didn't write your stories in the first inning...we know who they have in the pen over there."
