Comeback Afternoon

I went to have dinner, came back and the White Sox and Royals were still playing. Kansas City had the bases loaded with nobody out when I got back to the room. McEwing struck out, but Brown lined a single to give the Royals a 6-5 victory and the series against the best team in the AL. The Royals were down 5-0 in the 6th, but the bullpen put together seven innings of three hit ball to allow the comeback.

The Athletics were down 4-2 in the bottom of the ninth when they put together four hits to tie the game and three more in the 10th to win. Haren allowed 12 hits in 5 1/3 innings, but the Indians only managed four runs with those hits. Haren's seven K helped there. The A's will be in first place in the wild card race one more day.

The Royals might come close to being somewhere in the vicinity of becoming something near to generating just a skoche of excitement IF...

...they dump Lima and put youth of some sort there (difficult), and then found a way to get rid of Terrence Long and put a youthful outfielder there (not quite as difficult, but not easy).

The Royals would then have developing youth all over the place, and it would actually be interesting to watch the last 2 months to see which of the rookies steps forward (if any) and produces.

The young players is what has distinguished Allard Baird -- he's done well to stockpile a lot of young "maybes" that are within a season of doing...something...through a little drafting and a lot of minor trades, with a couple Rule V-ers in there, too.

Unfortunately, Baird's forays into the free-agent market have been abyssmal, which has hurt this team as much as the general lack of talent. But, all the talent their system does possess is at or near the big club, now, so the next two months and next season will prove to be a large test for this franchise.
