Short Sheets
Ben Sheets pitched very well today, but not good enough to win. He pitched a complete game five hitter against the Cardinals, allowing no walks while striking out nine. He gave up three runs, two earned, but lost 3-0.
Since the start of the 2004 season, Sheets is 20-22 with a 2.81 ERA. He's striking out over 9 per nine. He's walking a bit over 1 per 9. If the Brewers offense ever improves, Sheets will look a lot better to Cy Young voters.

I think MVP and Cy Young award voting will be very interesting about 10 years from now, when all of the people voting will have familiarity with performance analysis and are comfortable going outside of the box to measure how much a player has contributed to his team.
Too bad it's going to take that long to shake the voters who base Cy Young off of wins, and base MVP votes off of batting average and RBI.
Pertsonally, I think the Cy Young award should always go to the man with the most wins. After all, who's the award named after - Ed Walsh?
Ah, but as Sheets shows wins don't demonstrate how good a pitcher you are. Imagine if the Brewers actually had some bats in the lineup and scored runs.
Hey Devon, did you know that through his first 13 decisions of 2003, Royals pitcher Chris George was 9-4? That certainly sounds like he's on his way to Cy Young contention, right?
At the time he was 9-4, he was sporting an ERA of over 7.00.
C'mon, man. This is baseball. One stat never tells a complete story, especially not "wins". That's a stat that is partially a team accomplishment, partially luck, and partially skill.
