Another Duel

Roger Clemens and Jake Peavy have their own 1-0 game going in the sixth. Peavy's allowed five base runners through six, but no runs. The Padres got to Clemens for one run in the sixth with a Roberts triple and a Giles single. Clemens has seven strikeouts. The Astros have K'd just three times and walked twice, unusual vs. Jake.

Update: Brian Giles drives in his second run of the game with his 13th home run of the year. The Padres lead the Astros 2-0 in the 7th.

Update: Peavy gets the Astros in order in the ninth for his third shutout. Clemens is unlucky again.
Update: Peavy retires the Astros 1-2-3 in the 8th. Clemens is getting the short end of the stick again.

Typical PETCO game. Lane crushed a ball to right-center that would have been out of any remotely fair park, but PETCO swallowed it up. The park similarly robbed Biggio on a blast to left-center in the first game of the series.

Ten runs in two games for the series. Business as usual for PETCO.

Okay, I'm exaggerating a little. PETCO has coughed up an average of 7.8 runs per game this year. Not quite 1968 levels but pretty close to 1967. You might call this a turn-back-the-clock park...to the second deadball era of 1963-1972, when the average season produced similar offensive numbers.

That was also the time everybody was pronouncing baseball dead.

This game is the perfect example of why Roger Clemens shouldn't win the Cy Young this year. I mean, sure he's got a great ERA, but he's only won 11 games because he just can't seem to pitch to the score. You got zero runs? You can only give up zero runs! Or even less...that's what the best players do. I mean, look at Mark Mulder...he knows how to do that, and he's got 15 wins. Clemens may be having a good season ERA-wise, but he's just not the best pitcher in the league this season.
