Phillies Phlub

Billy Wagner stood one out away from getting a save vs. his former club when David Bell committed an error on a grounder, allowing Vizcaino to reach base. Brunlett ran, and on a hit and run, Taveras beat out an infield hit. Biggio then took his friend deep for a three run homer and an 8-6 Astros lead. Houston is two outs away from a sweep.

Update: Lidge strikes out Utley to end the game and release the Phillies boo-birds. This was a huge opportunity lost for Philadelphia. They drop 2 1/2 games back in the Wild Card race.

It's official, they swept 'em! WOOHOO!

If the Astros learn how to score runs while Clemens is on the mound, they'll be scary in the first round. Don't they know that only the opposing club, isn't supposed to know how to score on Clemens?

The four-game series between Florida and Houston next week is shaping up as maybe the decider for the wild card. If the Astros manage at least a split, they look to be the clear favorites, with an easy schedule the rest of the way.

But who knows? Houston could get swept in Milwaukee. The wild card situation changes every day. But the race is looking pretty grim for Washington and New York.

By the way, night gathers over all those stumblebum non-Padre teams out west in the NL. The Giants collapsed in the ninth last night while the Padres beat the Rockies in a typical low-scoring PETCO tilt.

If San Diego plays .500 the rest of the way (as they've played so far this season) San Fran would have to play .750 ball for the remaining 24 games just to tie them.

Barry or no Barry, that's real real REAL unlikely. The Giants are six games back, and San Diego's magic number is down to 19.
