Klesko Getting On

Bochy moved Klesko up to the two slot today, and it's paid off with Ryan walking and singling in the third. I don't understand, however, why Bochy put Loretta between Klesko and Giles. Did he not want two lefties in a row? The Padres have 2 on and 1 out in the third.

Update: Loretta hits into a 5-3 double play to end the inning.

and, for the second inning in a row, a double play ends the threat

Carpenter isn't that sharp. He does have a couple K's (one on the pitcher). But he's used 53 pitches to dodge the raindrops - three hits and a walk - through the first three.

Doesn't look like the Padres day. Edmonds bloops a double into left, and Pujols gets the IBB to load the bases with one out.

Walker up. Game might be on the line in the third.

Wild pitch scores a run. Peavy has to hold here, or the game looks almost lost.

Now Walker gets an IBB.

and now a single off Sweeney's glove makes it 4-0.

Posted by: David Dean at October 4, 2005 02:06 PM

Sanders gets a ball past Sweeney. 4-0 Cardinals. Seems ridiculous to say this, but the game feels like it's almost over.

DP ends the inning.

Carpenter continues to look less than overpowering, which is SD's main hope now.

Cancel that hope. Another DP ends the Padres fourth.

and the Padres have another chance ended by a double play in the 4th. That's three straight innings ended by a double play. Given the rest of the Padres pitching staff, it wouldn't be outrageous to say that the series is already on the line for San Diego.

Randa walks with one out in the 5th. Another Padre baserunner - can they avoid the DP?

Posted by: David Dean at October 4, 2005 02:23 PM

well, yes, but only by sacrificing

Posted by: David Dean at October 4, 2005 02:24 PM

Carpenter continues to allow baserunners, walking Randa in front of Peavy.

Boche keeps Peavy in the game, after instructing him not to hit into a DP.

Peavy can't put down the sac bunt and K's. This is not San Diego's day.

Posted by: Casey Abell at October 4, 2005 02:26 PM

nope, failed sacrifice. Peavy strikes out trying to bunt.

The Padres are having a rough afternoon in St. Louis

Posted by: David Dean at October 4, 2005 02:26 PM

Edmonds is only a triple short of the cycle as he singles off Peavy.

Any more runs and it really looks over.

Posted by: Casey Abell at October 4, 2005 02:32 PM

Pujols singles to left. Walker up with two on and one out. The last ditch for the Padres.

Posted by: Casey Abell at October 4, 2005 02:33 PM

Walker *ahem* walks to load the bases. Can Sanders come up with another wacky hit?

Posted by: David Dean at October 4, 2005 02:34 PM

Walker lives up to his name and loads the bases. Bochy looks like he'll stay with Peavy. Can't blame him. This is his best starter. If Peavy can't win, who can?

Posted by: Casey Abell at October 4, 2005 02:35 PM

Series over.

Posted by: David Dean at October 4, 2005 02:36 PM

Sanders slams the game away 8-0. When do the Sox and the Sox start?

Posted by: Casey Abell at October 4, 2005 02:37 PM

4:05 pm Casey
