Carpenter Gone

Chris Carpenter just removed from the game before the start of the seventh inning. It appears he had some physical problem. Maybe the series isn't over for the Padres just yet.

Update: Carpenter was complaining about cramps in his hand. Doesn't sound serious. Joe Morgan makes the point that Chris was probably dehydrated.

Update: The first two batters reach against Thompson. They have men on first and third for Greene.

Update: San Diego is on the board after a Sac Fly by Greene. They really need base runners, however, not fly ball outs.

Update: Carpenter was indeed dehydrated. Good call by Joe!

Update: La Russa brings in Flores with two out and a man on first. Why is he playing musical bullpen with a seven run lead?

Update: Flores strikes out Nady to end the inning. Doesn't this game really call for a mop up guy? Flores is the set-up man with Reyes out. Why risk an injury in a blow out?

San Diego gets a run on Greene's sac fly in the seventh. Appropriately enough, Randa almost grounds into a DP, but the ball is foul. Nothing else happens in the inning except another La Russa pitching change. The game was moving along too quick, I guess.

Cardinals 8-1 in the middle of the seventh.

Doesn't look like Edmonds will get a chance for the cycle. Maybe La Russa will make five more pitching changes to get the game past three hours.

TLR has a tough time bypassing the lefty-righty matchup business. It's maddening at times, but I'll bet there's a drinking game in there somewhere.

NEWSFLASH!!! La Russa changes pitchers in the eighth!!! We only got a six-run lead here!!!

It does get pretty silly after a while.

By the way, Carlos Almanzar of the Rangers just got a steroids suspension. So much for the conspiracy theory about holding off on announcements during the postseason.

Of course, the announcers will have to tell everybody who Carlos Almanzar is.

Why take chances in a playoff game? Why leave a reliever in who is getting shelled? Especially when there is a day off tomorrow.

Sure, it's a 6 run lead now, but with 2 guys on, it would easily become a 3 run lead.
