Joe vs. the Volcano
Joe Torre will return to manage the Yankees next year:
``I still want to manage here and I am satisfied that George feels he still wants me as manager,'' the 65-year-old manager told reporters at news conference at Yankee Stadium today.
It's amazing to me that Torre lasted this long with Steinbrenner. In the first 20 years of George's ownership, he changed managers as often as Mickey Rooney changed wives. Often, the managers just didn't want to take anymore from the boss; that's pretty much what happened with Showalter. Torre's been at the helm for ten seasons and wants more. Working under King George for that long without being fired should qualify anyone for a place in the Hall of Fame.

Winning four World Series and making the playoffs every year you're behind the helm should help his case too.
I know the money is great and it's probably fun not having to ever wait in line anywhere in New York, but is all that really worth working for Steinbrener?
Well it's either work under George Steinbrenner or work under an owner that will sabotage the team. I'm sue Joe realizes he'd rather work for an overdemanding owner who wants to win than the majority of owners in MLB who have the team for a tax write off. Lou Pinella would attest to that.
Well yeah....if you want to bring logic into the discussion. haha
I work for an employer who doesn't give a damn about teh quality of the work. I can attest that it's REALLY annoying from day to day. I can see where Pinella couldn't stand it.
As a Red Sox fan I have to say that I'm highly displeased with this news... But, seriously, Joe Torre did an excellent job this year, in what had to be one of the most frustrating years in his professional life, and I really thought that if Steinbrenner fired him it would be a huge mistake...
Heck, he's probably one of the few guys in a Yankee uniform that most Red Sox fans (very grudgingly) respect.
I'm not even sure why this announcement was considered news. Employee getting paid 6 million agrees to keep working for arrogant and demanding boss. Boss decides not to fire highly successful employee who has contract for two more years at over 6 million dollars. Only thing that would be news would be if either one did the opposite.
If you are getting paid a whole lot less than Torre and had a chance to get paid more elsewhere then you consider quitting.
LargeBill: Your argument makes sense in a rational world, but this is baseball. After years of loving the game, I've come to the conclusion that baseball economics are not at all in any way or shape rational. Stuff like this is news. Anywhere else, it's not. That's just the way it goes in baseball.
David:
This kind of post is why I visit Baseball Musings way too often... you've really figured out a way to post wonderful twists of the word and incisive statistical measures; a great balance seldom available. Thanks.
"doesn't give a damn about teh quality of the work", eh? You are fired!!!
