Vazquez Deal

The deal is done pending various physicals and league approvals. Javier Vazquez is about 1000 miles closer to home, and the Arizona Diamondbacks get three players in return. Orlando Hernandez, Luis Vizcaino and prospect Chris Young are now Diamondbacks, as rumored earlier.

Speculation is that the White Sox will turn their depth in starting pitching into a superstar position player:

What makes this deal so exciting is the door it opens for another blockbuster trade. The Sox could go into 2006 with six starting pitchers, allowing plenty of rest to their weary staff and providing insurance for an injury. But given the scarcity and value of quality starting pitching around the league, the Sox can dangle one of their starters for a huge return in a trade. The possibilities are tantalizing enough to make even the most stoic of Sox fans froth at the mouth with giddiness.

Just look at these names, each of which is a legitimate possibility: Miguel Tejada, Bobby Abreu, Carl Crawford, Vernon Wells, Carlos Beltran, Ken Griffey Jr., Ichiro Suzuki, Alex Rodriguez. Sounds ridiculous, but you can make a case (and don’t worry, I will) for any of those names suiting up in the Silver and Black next season.

I don't know if I'd put Carl Crawford in that class, but you get the point. The White Sox will be dealing from strength. They have the commodity everyone needs, and they should be able to improve the team with that commodity.

Why do I feel as though the Yankees are not about to trade Alex Rodriguez to the White Sox and the Blue Jays are not considering sending Vernon Wells anywhere? That seems kind of stupid to me.

In addition to Benjamin's comment, The M's will not trade Ichiro, they get a bundle in Japanese TV rights simply because he plays for them. Tejada isn't going anywhere.

I agree Ben, that speculative article is rather ridiculous. Which pitcher on the White Sox could net ARod, Beltran, Ichiro or Tejada? I particularly like the part where he writes "but you can make a case (and don't worry, I will)" and then proceeds not to.

The Mets have 7 starters, I guess that means they're about to get Albert Pujols. What, you don't buy it? Here's a reasonable trade:

Hmm... why do I feel that Chicago just go fleeced? Sure, Vazquez has a great K/BB rate, but he also gives up a ton of HR and the rate of HRs has been going up. Good ol' El Duque is, well, old, Vizcaino ain't anybody to write home about, but Young looks like a stellar prospect. He's hit .929 OPS during a full season of AA at 21, played solid CF and stole a ton of bases. He could easily be Arizona's starting CF come 2007.

Google search for Chris Young on baseballamerica.com

I guess the White Sox just figured they already have enough talent at the OF position (Anderson, Borchard?, Sweeney, and there is one more I cant think of) to be able to trade Chris Young away.

having 6 legit starters is awesome, but im not sure which one would get a superstar in return. garland? free agent after next year and will command megabucks. burhle? mileage. garcia? expensive, and milage. contraras? please, r u nuts?

why do teams insist on trading away a commodity that gives them a strength. keep the extra starter, and use him if someone gets hurt. or go w/ a 6man rotation for the first month or so to get in shape, or the last month when everyone is worn down.

The Yankees are NOT going to trade Alex Rodriguez to the White Sox for a pitcher. Ridiculous.

Though this is generally silly speculation in regards to WHO they could get with one of their extra pitchers, the idea that they could further bolster their position players with their glut of pitchers is reasonable. You have to at least credit the ChiSox for not sitting pat after their WS victory, and at least trying to further improve. The real question is whether or not Vazquez will live up to his potential...Jason makes some great points...but in my mind the benefit of the doubt goes to the ChiSox front office.

What Dave S. said.

Otherwise, the consensus seems to be the WSox gm is having trouble getting off the leftover champagne that he keeps in that paper bag in his desk drawer.

Remember, it wasn't Williams who said, "now watch us reel in A-Rod." Not familiar with the writer of the piece (it's uncredited) but he/she was obviously painting a picture with crayons, and we don't like the colors.

In the end, the idea that the Sox gm doesn't know what he's doing doesn't hurt him, and more probably helps with respect to dealmaking.

It's important to have trade bait available to get Carl Everett every July.

re: Chisox moving a pitcher for Abreu

Abreu can be moved for Garland or even better, Beuhrle, who is terrific. The righthander would be better given that the leftfield porch is the short one in Philly's part, and that he would therefore face more lefties.

Abreu for a starter and another outfielder would be great. The Chisox and Phillies have already pulled off one great deal. Another would be great. The Chisox still need another lefthanded bat and need defense in the outfield.

The Phils need starting pitching and can move Abreu since they now have Rowand-Utley-Burrell-Howard as an interior lineup, which can be bolstered by anyone they acquire for right field or augmented by Jason Michaels, who had a lot of win shares last season in Center field.
