Paying the Astros
Lisa Gray calculates the money flowing from the Houston organization to its players and finds that even without an insurance payment on Bagwell, the Astros are right in line with 2005.

That's interesting stuff from Lisa. I looked at Lisa's numbers by position for 2005 and 2006 and found some interesting changes.
position players (incl bench) get 17 million more in 2006.
RPs get 4 million more,
SPs get 11 million less
players not playing get 4 million less
Total increase is about 6 million.
That sounds OK until you realize that you've got an increase without paying Clemans (18 million). If you exclude him from both 2005 and 2006 amounts then salaries go up by about 20 million for the rest of the team. And the only key change in personnel is Preston Wilson (at 4 million).
If the Astros pick up Clemens or replace him with anyone expensive then the payments to players look set to be 15-20 million higher in 2006.
The point of Lisa's article, I think, is that Drayton should use any money from insurance on Bagwell towards players rather than in his pocket. If the Astros pick up Clemens or replace him, then get insurance money for Bagwell, that would put the budget in the same ballpark as 2005 and I would be happy for Drayton to put the money in his pocket.
