Young Padre

I don't understand why the San Diego Padres picked up Walter Young from the waiver wire. Young, a big, heavy, power hitting first baseman is ill suited to the Padres. His strength, hitting for power, would be mitigated by PETCO Park. His weaknesses, speed and defense, are what the Padres need in their low-run environment. Of all the teams that could benefit from Young, San Diego would be near the bottom of the list.

True, but still not as dumb as the O's waiving him in favor of a couple of 35 year old first basemen on the downswing of their careers (Conine and Millar). No wonder Miggie's ticked off.

And what about nearly every other club (all of the AL and most of the NL) that passed on YOung too. Assuming the Padres had an open spot on the 40-man there is no downside to this move.

Hard to imagine Young actually making the team. It's more likely he becomes part of very crowded DH situation at Portland.

I agree with Geoff; I think this was a move to help AAA Portland. Portland has a lot of DH types but none of them are left handed hitters. I still wouldn't use a 40-man spot on a guy who doesn't help you much in the majors.
