Second to None

Barry Bonds doesn't want to bat second:

Bonds was sidelined for most of the 2005 season with a knee injury and Alou anticipates having to pull him for a defensive replacement late in games.

The outfielder has typically batted third or fourth.

"I am going to speak with Felipe, because at this point in my career it doesn't work for me to be second bat," Bonds told the Dominican newspaper, El Caribe, for its Sunday editions.

Bonds was a good leadoff man early in his career. If he's going to be walked every time there are men on base, why not let him set up the other power hitters in the lineup? The idea makes sense to me.

There's no 'Bonds' in 'team player'

It makes sense, especially if Bonds is taken out late in games.

Bonds, Peyton Manning, and Miguel Tejada would be great teammates.

This is probably the same response any #3 or #4 hitter who is aging would have.
First, the #2 spot is seen by "baseball people" as a slap-hitting, bunting guy that moves along the leadoff man for the "big boys" of the lineup. Second, Bonds probably thinks he is too old to be the stereotypical #2 guy.

However, I would definitely bat Bonds #2 if I was running the team.

Bonds not a team player?

Shocking!

Thankfully, at this point in Barry Bonds' career, it doesn't work for me to cheer for him.

If Barry doesnt like it, then I am all for it.

I think inflammation in Barry's knee is going to flair except when he's in the 3-4 spot.

Could be he's afraid he's going to have to run the bases a bit harder coming at the 2 spot in the lineup. I think that's a fair concern. Sure he's going to get on, but if I'm a forty two year old with bad knees, I'm going to be worried about having to try and score from first on a double, let alone a single.

I can understand Bonds not wanting to hit second, but why was it necessary for him to make a public statement about it? Why not talk to the manager privately instead of talking about it in the press? This is especially true when you consider the number of times Bonds has refused to talk to the press about any number of topics. Is he just looking for a fight?

Maybe batting 2nd may be the best thing for all of us....he'll break down being the #2 and we'll be rid of him once and for all. I really don't want him breaking the homerun record. What an insult to Hank. does anyone remember how Bonds, being given an offer during his free agency year with the Buccs, equated the "low" offer made to him as being akin to a woman being raped? Doesn't anyone remember that? He's good...perhaps great...don't think steriods gives you the ability to hit .370...but I question how many HR's were his and not chemically charged..?
