Thoughts on the Red Sox
Chad Finn offers his insights on all the latest Red Sox news at Touching all the Bases.
This is pure speculation on my part, but I wonder if the Theo rehiring was somehow triggered by the completion of the Cincinnati ownership change. Castellini fired O'Brien so quickly he probably made up his mind to let Dan go before he took control of the team. So, while Catellini is hobnobbing with his fellow owners, might he start inquring to John Henry about Theo? After all, these are Castellini's criteria for a new GM:
Castellini listed a litany of attributes he wants in a GM:
• An unexcelled work ethic.
• A proven ability to evaluate player talent.
• The aptitude to develop a strong baseball organization.
• The ability to communicate our vision to the fans and the media of Cincinnati.
• Somebody who can establish a culture of winning.
Sounds like Theo to me. It is any wonder the Red Sox issued the message from the plan on the way back from Arizona?
Those are pretty standard attributes I think any owner would look for in a GM. They also sound like John Scheurholz, Billy Beane, Walt Jocketty, et al. While Castellini may very well have had Theo in mind, I dont think his criteria is a coded message for "I want Theo." Nor do I think Theo would have ever seriously considered that job. Besides, Theo has never displayed any ability to properly communicate his vision to the fans and media of Cincinnati ;)
I can't stand the reasoning that a someone is a top defender b/c he has won one or more gold glove awards! That's one thing that scares me about Theo's re-entry into the Sox organization: he uses gold glove awards to defend players' fielding ability.
the first openly professional team in baseball history was the 1869 Cinci. RedStockings.....baseball needs the Reds to be a sucessful team....its not a notion that needs qualifying.....its like football not having the Bears.

jason, maybe i'm wrong here, but i don't think theo thinks that gold gloves are the best measurement of fielding. my guess is that he uses them when talking to the press because the public understands gold gloves better than UZR, FRAR, or probablistic models of range. i'm pretty sure the sox have proprietary defensive stats they use in player evaluation.
