Garner Ejected

Phil Garner was tossed early tonight, apparently for arguing balls and strikes.

Plate umpire Rick Reed called a ball on a pitch by Wandy Rodriguez to Craig Wilson with one out in the first inning. Garner apparently didn't like the call and went to the plate to confront Reed.

This strikes me as an intentional move by Garner. He probably had a run-in with Reed in a previous game and wanted to make his point early. Arguing balls and strikes is strictly forbidden, so Reed was in his rights to toss Phil quickly.

You don't mention the really weird display Reed put on; after one close pitch where Rodriguez apparently wanted the call, he actually jogged all the way out to the mound and said something to Rodriguez then jogged back to the plate. Rodriguez had seemed to look in after a few close calls on balls that missed, but he wasn't doing anything terribly obvious to show up the ump. After Reed's little outing is when Garner got tossed.

As Saul mentioned I think it has more to do with how out of line Reed was with his inappropriate antics. He needs to be accountable for such unprofessional behavior.

Apparently Wandy Rodriguez mouthed "wow" to his catcher after a close call and the umpire ran out to the mound to lecture him. Garner went out there to deflect the umpire's wrath and keep Wandy in the game. Apparently no bad blood between Garner and the umpire. Afterward, the umpire said Garner was doing what he is supposed to do...defend his pitcher. But arguing balls and strikes is an automatic ejection. Good thing for the Astros that Wandy stayed in the game: he pitched a nice game, collected another win, and reduced his ERA to the low 2's.

So the pitcher mouthed wow... That hardly justifies an umpire running to the mound. There is no justification for him having done that and yes Garner was given no choice but to go out there after the inappropriate antics of the umpire.

I agree with everyone here. Reed was the one who actually showed up Rodriguez by jogging out and performing a drive-by shooting. And I agree with Phil Garner going to the well and getting himself ejected for it. I expect Reed-a veteran who should know better-to be fined.

and here it is 4 days later and i STILL have not heard bout no fine.

and having re-watched that game tape closely like 3 times, wandy got NO borderline calls all game and it was VERY obvious that the pitch in question was most definitely in the strike zone
