Something New
One thing I love about baseball is that there's always something new. I just saw a play that I've never seen before. Derek Jeter is standing on second with two out and Giambi at the plate. The Nationals use the shift, so the third baseman is standing next to Jeter at second. The pitcher is standing on the mound, and Derek just takes off for third. There's no pitch, no throw to a base. O'Connor just steps off the mound. It's the first time I remember seeing a steal without a throw by the pitcher.

Does that count as a steal, or defensive indifference.
It should count as defensive stupidity.
Saw a similar situation last week or ten-- except the runner was on third. Forget if it was Bonds or Ortiz, but the infielders were so far around that there was noone to hold the runner on third and he was more than halfway down the line; he had home "prestolen" if he chose to chance it.
I remember a Yankees/Indians playoff game where that happened.... must've been '97?
Lofton was on third, Vizquel on first with Pettite pitching, and the Yankees were TERRIFIED of the double steal. Vizquel took of, wanting to get into a run down, but Pettite just held the ball, basically letting Omar walk to second.
