Guillen Power
Carlos Guillen doubles in three runs to keep Detroit on a roll. The long hit makes the score 4-0.
Guillen's having a great year, which made me want to look at this comparison:
2006, Through 7/21 | A-Rod | Guillen | Mariner SS |
Batting Average | .284 | .295 | .305 |
On Base Average | .386 | .385 | .326 |
Slugging Average | .510 | .500 | .416 |
It's nice the Mariners can let good offensive shortstops go like that. Detroit picks up another run on a sacrifice fly to take a 5-0 lead to the top of the second.
Update: Four singles and a Kotsay homer later, the Athletics tie the game at five. It's Kotsay's first homer of the year with men in scoring position.

I don't remember much made of it at the time, but boy that Guillen-for-Ramon Santiago trade came out pretty lopsided, did it not?
it sure did, but at the time of the trade, seattle was looking to add power to the lineup (laughably opting for Rich Aurilla, hoping for a redux of his 2001 season). More importantly, Guillen was seen as a bad influence on Freddy Garcia, whom the M's were hoping to salvage. Turns out they should have kept Guillen instead of Freddy.
what's funny about the quest for power is that Guillen has had roughly a .500 slugging since the trade (when healthy, at least).
