Scoring But Not Winning
Andre Ethier broke out of his slump with a four for five night, including two home runs. That helped the Dodgers score six, but that was only enough to send the game into extra innings. In the eleventh, San Diego stopped Joshing and passed the Bar as Josh Barfield doubled and Josh Bard singled Barfield home. Hoffman set down the Dodgers 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning for the 7-6 San Diego win. That gives the Padres a 1 game lead in the NL West.
Mike Cameron homered and doubled in the game. Talk about getting what you'd expect from a player. Mike's OBA is five points higher than last year, and his slugging percentage is one point lower. Given that he's going to play close to a full season barring injury, that was a pretty good deal for San Diego.

The Barfield double was a light pop-up into the middle of no-man's land in shallow center. the CF and 2B ran out to get it, but it fell between them when they tried to avoid colliding with each other. By the time they recovered the ball and got it back to the infield, Barfield was sliding into second.
The Padres have also gotten the excellent defense from Cameron that was perhaps the main reason they went for him. He has been a big key to them being second in MLB in defensive efficiency.
In the bottom of the 11th, Cameron nabbed a ball (can't remember off of whose bat, maybe Isturiz's) that I thought for sure was going to fall for a hit. Maybe I can curse Cameron by saying he's a "five-tool player."
That double was a result of some great hustle by Barfield. Also, credit the umpire for getting into position to make the right call.
