Melky vs. Bobby

Yankees fan Lisa at Subway Squawkers compares recent performances by Melky Cabrera and Bobby Abreu, and is afraid Melky is going to be the odd-man out next year.

Any writer attempting to criticize Abreu's value, but doesn't mention his OBP, has zero credibility.

As much as I would love for Lisa to be right, she is not considering several things. For example Bobby's prolific OBP and extraordinarly patient bat will help the Yankees possibly to score more runs than even a healthy Sheffield. The short right field porch which left handers have been using to their advantage for decades won't hurt either. One could argue for the rejuvenation of being sent to one of the most talked about franchise in sports right now after spending those 10 years with a floundering massively underachieving baseball team (there have been rumors of Abreu playing extra hard these past few, rumor filled days). Abreu also brings more to the table than Melky in terms of speed and basestealing prowess. Also Melky now gives the Yankees a relative force off the bench, and a player who has shown that pressure does not bother him as much as another overpaid Yankee. Speaking of overpaid, granted pricetag difference is probably more than the skills difference between Melky and Bobby, but we know that this is something that Yankees are not concerned with, as they continue their quest of satiating the frustration of being a team whose only achievement this millenium has been having front row seats to Arizona, Florida, and especially Boston's achievements. This is all without even getting into the fact that they gave up almost nothing but payroll to land a fish of this caliber.

I don't get it. Melky plays LF and Abreu RF. The tradeoff isn't between Melky and Abreu, but Melky and Matsui (assuming he can even come back in a month), and then to a lesser extent Melky and Bernie or Phillips (who plays 1st while Giambi DHs). If Sheffield comes back (big IF), he'll undoubtedly DH. Melky has at least all this month to prove he should play every day. Next year is another story, but if Melky plays well he'll be in there, trust me.
