Steve Lyons Fired

If you're wondering why Steve Lyons is not in the booth for Fox today, he's been canned:

In the second inning of Friday's game between Detroit and Oakland, Piniella talked about the success light-hitting A's infielder Marco Scutaro had in the first round of the playoffs. Piniella said that slugger Frank Thomas and Eric Chavez needed to contribute, comparing Scutaro's production to finding a "wallet on Friday" and hoping it happened again the next week.

Later, Piniella said the A's needed Thomas to get "en fuego" -- hot in Spanish -- because he was currently "frio" -- or cold. After Brennaman praised Piniella for being bilingual, Lyons spoke up.

Lyons said that Piniella was "hablaing Espanol" -- butchering the conjugation for the word "to speak" -- and added, "I still can't find my wallet."

"I don't understand him, and I don't want to sit too close to him now," Lyons continued.

Fox executives told Lyons after the game he had been fired.

Piniella, approached before Saturday's Game 4, declined to comment on the situation except to say: "No, he's not here today."

I always thought Lyons was a strange choice for broadcasting. He was a stupid baseball player. He just did strange things, like trying to steal third with two outs in the ninth and Wade Boggs up. His mouth finally caught up with him.

Piniella didn't know what a GED is.

Jebus.

My view is that Lyons IS a moron and a horrible baseball analyst. Fox is dreadful and, whether intentional or not, fails to even sell the game once the Yankees exited the playoffs (this season and last season). That the public isn't watching the two series right now is absurd and Fox's fault. Hell, it sells an NFL match-up of Arizona vs. Green Bay! Whatever, I don't want to dwell on all of this...to fire Lyons for what he said is silly. As a Spanish speaker having lived abroad a number of times, Lyons' comments represent the ignorance of so many in our country rather than any type of abject racist intent. Get rid of Lyons because he's an awful analyst/color man; don't get all high-and-mighty and imply that he's been fired for racial insensitivity. I mean this is FOX...FOX!!!!

Posted by: Kent at October 14, 2006 06:43 PM

Lyons may have been a nut, but he was entertaining. I'd prefer that they ditch Thom Brennaman, who's just irritating as all get-out. Piniella's not bad as an analyst, but who doesn't know what a GED is?

Posted by: Adam Villani at October 14, 2006 06:54 PM

Nope. Neither yesterday's comments or the jewish comments were at all racist, and I'm a minority person myself very sensitive toward ACTUAL racism. To claim Lyons was racist is to discredit items that are REALLY racist.

The one with Pinella was not a dig at Hispanics, but at Pinella himself, as Pinella made a comment that he seemed to often look for wallets, an unusual analogy. It was a joke, one which Pinella laughed at. The joke was directed at Pinella. It would be the same if Thom Brennaman said some crazy analogy about wallets

Regarding Shawn Green, it probably wasn't something he should have said, but the 'money' aspect is not to imply that Jews are greedy. It's a nonchalant remark like, hey, too bad he didn't get some more spending money as a kid.

I support Steve Lyons here.

I think they should fire ANY broadcaster who uses the word "filthy" to describe a pitch, when they mean it was tough or unhittable. Listening, there, Rex Hudler, ya dope-smokin' idiot?

Posted by: Duxe at October 14, 2006 10:15 PM

how many people find lou's voice annoying?

Posted by: john z at October 15, 2006 01:26 AM

I think the stated racial slur reasoning for firing Lyons is pretty weak. However, I found him to be an idiot with no real knowledge of the game. I'm very happy he's gone. I really agree with the first comment. It's painful to watch national broadcasts of games where the anouncers are such homers. Lyons was one of the worst. Not surprising that Faux would ruin the baseball playoffs. Only 7 more years...

Posted by: Jeff Mc. at October 15, 2006 03:39 AM

Hello, it's a baseball game, on fox, and guess what he's a baseball player, on live TV, give me a break.

Some idiot in a suit with the title of producer wants to make a name for himself, gets all high and mighty, and fires lyons for being, lyons. I mean what do they want bob costas. I find the endless marketing and advertisements on my screen of fox's weak ass shows more racist than lyons, I mean check out an episode of american dad lately, yikes. Fox sucks, lyons is better off.

Posted by: joe at October 16, 2006 03:44 PM

Fox firing Lyons for the reason stated is just plain cowardly. I am so sick of corparate (dick) heads with no backbone whatsoever. If you are going to fire someone for this sort of thing you might just as well close up shop now and go back to bed

Posted by: Chris H at October 17, 2006 09:46 AM

Fox's constant cutaways are distracting to watching a game. Does anyomne there know how to televise Baseball? Or is anybody in the truck watching?

Learn how to televise a game. Lyons is the least of
your problems.

I can't watch a game. The constant cutaways to the stands to watch something else in between every pitch is damaging to the continuity I look for in a game. How a batter adjusts to the pitch, how he prepares for the next one. How the pitcher and catcher get together. That is eliminated with all the cutaways. The real game is happening in between pitches.

Does anyone in the truck folow baseball or are these production people from MTV?

Enough seats shots and close-ups. If you want a women audience, you should have bought a Makeover show or show "Bull Durham" again...

please do something !!!

Posted by: Philip at October 17, 2006 10:48 AM

They all want to be production people for MTV. The producers are taught that staying on the same shot is boring. So after a pitch, you get a picture of the manager, a close up of the pitcher, a close up of the batter, and then the next pitch. Watch a game from the 1970s sometime on ESPN Classic. Between pitches, they stay on the centerfield camera, and you get to see all the preparation for the next pitch. I like that a lot better, too, but most people find that boring.

Posted by: David Pinto at October 17, 2006 11:03 AM

Lou Pinella was annoying as hell that entire series. I'm glad Steve Lyons put him in his place. Fire Lou not Steve! Steve is probably better off not working for a bunch of race traitors and jews anyway.

Posted by: John at October 17, 2006 02:56 PM

Its hard to take the firing at face value when FOX chooses to script innappropriate scenes into their show. Are they noit responsible for Melissa Gilbert cheating on her husband WITH A DOG!
Clearly, he was fired because he was a lousy broadcaster and FOX didn't have the balls to fire him for that reason. Given his track record, it was just a matter of time for him to utter the kind of remark that he did. But, they had to know who he was before they hired him. After all he did drop pants in a major league game.

Posted by: Michael Helman at October 17, 2006 05:06 PM

If Lyons comments are racist(which they weren't)...then wait until some black guy or latino is standing on second base and the announcer says" i wonder if he's stealing signs from the catcher and will try to steal third".. that should get him fired for insinuating that blacks and latinos are thieves....

Posted by: Robert at October 17, 2006 05:19 PM

Hey if I wanted to hear Sweet Lou speaking spanish...I'd put the damn Spanish channel on.!!!!!!!!... So next time i put FOX on , I want English!!!!

Posted by: Rob at October 17, 2006 05:44 PM

I think the brain trust of FOX is that stupid animated baseball they had on during last years series. Maybe they should bring in someone more politically correct like one of their FOX stars like the Family Guy or maybe bring back Al Bundy. What idiots run that network.

Posted by: Steven at October 17, 2006 05:46 PM

Fox should take Lyons back and apologize to him and everyone for being over stupid about what offends someone or something when IT"S A GODDAMN JOKE--I think Lyons is very funny and I will really miss his commentary with Charlie on the Dodger TV station next season---has anyone ever gotten fired by insulting or making fun of the white race---no --it's always the other races that can't take a joke---let's all just lighen up and laugh at ourselfs if necessary

Posted by: Chip at October 17, 2006 05:53 PM

If you are going to fire anyone GET RID OF TIM MCCARVER! What an idiot! I turn on ESPN Radio and listen to their commentary if McCarver is the color commentator.

Lyons comment/joke wasn't funny, but guess what else it wasn't. . . .racist! Come'on, FOX, if you want to fire him because he is terrible, fire him because he is terrible, but be "man" enough to say so rather than hiding behind the curtain of being intollerant of racism

Posted by: Tristan at October 17, 2006 06:26 PM

FOX fired him for that? Lame. He got fired because he sucked as an analyst and FOX used this as an excuse to get rid of him. That's a cowardly thing to do though. I won't watch FOX any more because of this.

Posted by: Thang at October 17, 2006 07:24 PM

The worst tag team in baseball is Buck/McCarver. And every year it's the same 2 idiots that I am forced to listen to for the LCS and WS games. God I hope ESPN gets the broadcasting rights from MLB. AND it is FOXs strong arming why WS home field is decided by the winning league of the All-Star game. LAME!!!! FOX SUCKS!!!

Posted by: J Dieter at October 17, 2006 08:24 PM

I don't know what's worse, FOX news or FOX sports. They are completely incompetent at both. Why can't FOX just stick to the Simpsons. When they try to get personalities they get idiots like Geraldo Rivera and terrible commentators like McCarver and Buck who, by coincidence, are also idiots. Please FOX stick to cartoons!

Posted by: Roy at October 17, 2006 09:15 PM

FOX has nothing on it's network to watch except sports. Their primetime programming is raunchy (Simpsons), racy (O.C., Married with Children), and goofy (remember Party of 5)? Now, they fire an analyst because he's goofy? Strange stuff, I just don't get it.

Posted by: Bob M at October 17, 2006 09:50 PM

Sad world we live in! Steve Lyons is a white guy who is watched closer than a poker table in Vegas! I am sure some 35 year old, pin head Ivy Leaguer is looking like a real hardass today for firing Lyons. Maybe someone can correct me but Brenneman should be announcing funerals and Pinella's voice changes too much. Look at the list of trash FOX and other networks espouse as entertainment and that makes Lyons look like Jack Benny.

See you on ESPN soon Steve (I hope)!

Posted by: Tim at October 17, 2006 10:08 PM

Steve Lyons is actually a very astute broadcaster. Those who think otherwise are not true baseball fans. I assume he will get a very lucrative offer elsewhere. And then "all of-a-sudden you will pretend to be his friend again. Steve is absolutely one of the best announcers in baseball.

Posted by: Alex at October 17, 2006 10:13 PM

I spoke with the Dodgers. They are behind Steve Lyons all the way, and steve of course continues to be employed with the Dodgers, and will continue to broadcast the Dodger games next year.

Posted by: Alex at October 17, 2006 10:22 PM

This is pathetic. You get fired just for saying things like that? It's baseball, colorful commentary is part of the ratings... why don't you put barbara walters and dr. phil to do Fox baseball commentaries... jeez

Posted by: Jae at October 17, 2006 10:44 PM

What is sad is a man lost his job. What is real sad is that because of his comments some elite executives have made the connection between hispanics and stealing wallets. What? Isn't that racism or is that just prejudice?

Posted by: Pete at October 17, 2006 11:04 PM

Very well said Pete

Posted by: alex at October 17, 2006 11:22 PM

I think it is time we stop searching for the little things that might upset the few and start seeing things as they truly are, which is "light hearted and harmless". Let's stop making a big deal out of nothing, especially when it can cost someone their families liveyhood. Fox should have looked into who Steve Lyons was before they passed judgement just to be politically correct.

Posted by: Dan at October 17, 2006 11:31 PM

feel bad for steve, he was funny, fuck the beaners

Posted by: austin at October 18, 2006 12:20 AM

I think we all agree this is not a race thing. Steve is funny and not at all mean spirited.

Posted by: alex at October 18, 2006 12:45 AM

The Fox execs are spinless white pussy cunts. I'm a soccer guy, and not interested in baseball. White American people are becoming pussified compared to the rest of the world.

Posted by: Dave at October 18, 2006 01:04 AM

I happen to be part hispanic, specifically Mexican. Thanks to the political agendas of the day, I've become more and more aware/sensitive to remarks, statements and political views that seem inherently racist. Anyhow, being that I feel attentive when it comes to these things, I have to say I don't see any racism or political incorrectness in Steve Lyons' words. I think Fox made a pretty big stretch there. I think I understand the connection Fox has tried to make with Lyons' words, but it just doesn't make sense. I despise racism, but I also happen to dispise false accusations and the labeling of people/words as racist when they aren't. I don't think either helps our society very much.

Posted by: Jake at October 18, 2006 01:09 AM

I heard about the Steve Lyons thing earlier today on sporting news radio...what he actually said opposed to what is implied are two completely different things. First, he's an idiot. We love the players, but just because we liked them on the field doesn't mean we like them in the booth (i.e. has anybody seen Ronnie Lott?) I really think FOX executives fell asleep at the wheel during his hiring. I mean come on, it's Steve Lyons a bonafide non-conformist. Did they expect less? Second, for the love of God, please, please, and pretty please can we get rid of McCarver/Buck. Those two idiots have destroyed postseason baseball. I'm sure all fans would say they enjoy their local sportcasters better than these two homers. During the 2004 Playoffs against the Yanks, I thought for a moment I was watching a New York feed in my Boston Home until I saw an ad for a local establishment. Get rid of these guys please. And another thing, stop with the damn cutaways! Way to often does the feed come back to the game from commercial break, just so I can watch the catcher throw the ball back to the pitcher for strike one.

Another example of a white man not being able
to make a comment and the PC crowd getting
their panties in a wad. If Steve Lyons were black,
it would have been okay to make a comment.
When do white people have to quit kissing
everyone's ass?

Posted by: maxalley at October 18, 2006 01:18 AM

FOX has Pinella, ESPN has Joe Morgan
HORRIBLE X's two. Might as well be Rosanne Barr for 9 innings
Makes you want to mute.
Seems they were just looking for a reason to fire Lyons.

Posted by: mcp at October 18, 2006 02:50 AM

I don't see anything racist about it, just sounds kind of aimless and stupid, the kind of thing a guy might say especially if he was paid to talk and fill dead air. FOX exec's should have fired themselves.

Piniella's voice is irritating, and he really didn't bring any amazing baseball wisdom to the broadcast either. He may motivate players, but he didn't tell me anything that I didn't already know.

Posted by: Rick at October 18, 2006 12:18 PM

Let's just get a restraining order forbidding Fox to show any baseball games, ever, for any reason, and be done with it. Fox can continue to bring us "Wife Swap" or whatever the hell it is, and we'll all go to ESPN or TBS (now sadly Don-Sutton-less) for our ballgames.

Posted by: jules at October 18, 2006 01:31 PM

The problem is that the networks are sanitizing all of the color for the color man's job. What he said was dumb but an offense worthy of a termination. I say no!!! The second victim of the politically correct entertainment industry was Harold Reynolds!!!
Now we the consumers have to suffer through their boring drivel!! The networks are forgetting that they are in the entertainment business!!!!

Posted by: johng at October 18, 2006 04:21 PM

Ok I’ve been thinking since my last comment---now this may raise the bar on this discussion---Fox came out with a B movie some 13 plus years ago called “White men can’t jump”---a basketball hustle movie—what if they called it Black man can’t jump or Mexicans can’t jump—everyone gets fired---what’s going on here---can we just stop this pandering to whatever race is whining the loudest at the moment and leave these sports announcers alone.

Posted by: chip at October 18, 2006 11:17 PM

I bet FOX will now hire Llamar Thomas, former U of M player, who was in the booth during that disgusting brawl. He was fired for his comments "You don't come 'cross the ocean to our house the OB blah blah blah." He would fit right in at FOX.

Posted by: Mr. Cadbury at October 18, 2006 11:35 PM

Does anyone know how to e-mail the Fox Sports people--they seem to not want to give it out--wonder why.

Posted by: chip at October 19, 2006 08:50 PM

Fox has to be kidding. Their entire schedule of shows is offensive but Lyon's comment was not. Get rid of those boring toolboxes Buck & McCarver. The know everything and never shut up and they're dull as hell. I would rather hear each team's local announcers do the games.

Posted by: jajjja at October 19, 2006 09:42 PM

I am happy that Steve Lyons was fired. This should not be tolerated. In a time that we are in it is clearly evident that people ares till not getting the fact that you cannot make comments like that. If you do choose to make racist comments you will be held accountable. It is only accountability that will eventually make people get it.

Posted by: Rudy at October 20, 2006 12:02 AM

Rudy, if you're a white person please shoot yourself in the head you self-hating prick, and if you're non-white get over it and admit you've already won. This country is fast turning darker and darker, and this kind of discrimination against whites is disgusting. What Steve Lyons said was 100% not racist or discriminatory in any form.

Posted by: Rudy at October 20, 2006 12:52 AM

Maybe the solution to all this would be to stick that
blowhard Tommy Lasorda into the booth. He could
drown out anything McCarver, Buck, Lyons, etc.
had to say.

Posted by: PROSERPINE at October 24, 2006 03:52 PM

I think that this was a lame excuse by Fox to fire Steve Lyons. They apparently were not happy with him and were looking for something, anything, to let him go. Sure enough, they found it. And if they could tar and feather him as a racist, so much the better.

OK, if you want to fire the guy, just fire him. There's no need to throw him under a bus or try to make some

Where I get pissed off is where the wire service accounts intentionally leave out details and specifics and seem to want to pile on poor Steve as well. Again, they'll only present what they want to present to make it seem as heinous and irredemable as they can.

This is what the media does, with its zero tolerance to racism. You do realize now that this incident will follow

The bitter irony here is that, in the name of tolerance and understanding, this attitude actually shows NO such tolerance. In fact it reflects the same closed-minded, hateful attitude that they would have us believe exists in Steve Lyons.

And don't think this will not follow him to the grave. Literally. The surest bet in the world is that this incident will be covered in his obituary.

Or, to put it another way: Can anyone say or do ANYTHING anymore without having to worry about reprisal or risk to their livelihood? Apparently not.

I'm glad the Dodgers saw through it though.
